Johnson Village Book Club
A neighbor has suggested starting a women's book club within Johnson Village. The idea is to read and discuss interesting books at a relaxing pace and help people meet each other within the neighborhood. At this time, the club would meet about every other month (roughly every 6 weeks). If you are interested in joining, please contact Shelley Post at shelleypost@comcast.net with your name and contact information.

Petition to Improve Shamrock Road
JVNA adopted at its board meeting on September 28 a resolution in support of the petition calling on the City to improve pedestrian and traffic safety on Shamrock road at the railroad crossing.  Shamrock road is a major collector street and serves as a corridor for Johnson village traffic seeking to access JPA. Shamrock as it approaches the railway is a winding street with poor visibility, and irregular street side parking.  The absence of of sidewalks at the crossing forces pedestrians crossing the railway to use traffic lanes.  The expected closing of the JPA bridge for reconstruction in February 2010 for as long as two years will see the redirection of considerable amounts of traffic onto Shamrock, which is the only street crossing the railroad tracks between JPA and 9th street.  The increased traffic will worsen already serious traffic and pedestrian safety issues on Shamrock.

JVNA volunteers will be gathering petition signatures from JVNA and our adjacent neighborhoods in early October.  We plan to present the petition to City council with a request that they direct the traffic engineers to come up with solutions to these problems in consultation with the neighborhoods, and to act in advance of the bridge closing.

Mom's Circle and Play Group
As a mother of 2 toddlers,  Candace Carey, new JVNA President, would like to organize a Mom Circle/Playgroup here in the neighborhood. Candace noticed so many kids playing and it would be great to get to know everyone and for the kids to make friends. The group could meet one late morning or early afternoon a week preferably  on either Mondays, Wednesdays, or Fridays and the occasional Saturday for the moms who also have to work. If anyone is interested please contact Candace at jvna@live.com

Johnson Elementary News
Johnson Elementary PTO is having a fundraising drive based on local grocery store shopping. Giant, Food Lion, Harris Teeter, Kroger all donate money and/or equipment to schools, designated by their customers, based on the money spent during the school year. This is how the program works: By scanning a customer’s bonus/discount card number, the stores designate funds to schools based on money spent or products purchased during the school year. No additional money will be added to your purchases. You simply shop as usual, but when your discount card is scanned you would also be helping our school.

I am writing ask if you would be willing to designate Johnson Elementary School as a recipient of bonus points accumulated while grocery shopping. Please email pto.johnson@hotmail.com with  the following information:

Your Name and Harris Teeter VIC card#, Kroger Plus card#, Giant Bonuscard#, Food Lion MVP card#

We hope you will reply to this email so that this registration drive will be a success. There is no cost to you and much benefit for these children.

 Thank you for your consideration,

Saskia Santen
President, Johnson Elementary School Parent-Teacher Organization
